"A Call to Discipleship"

Introduction...

THIS MORNING we continue our series on “The Church on Purpose: Invite | Grow | Serve.”

Today’s message begins our journey to understand the second purpose: GROW, or more specifically, DISCIPLESHIP—the intentional following and becoming like Jesus Christ!

“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”

Four Observations...

I. The Call to Follow Jesus Happens When We are DOING LIFE! - (5:1-3)

II. The Call to Follow Jesus REQUIRES FAITH! - (5:4-6)

Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.

John 3:16 NIV84

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

John 3:18 NIV84

Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.

III. The Call to Follow Jesus is an ENCOUNTER with the LIVING GOD! - (5:6b-10)

IV. The Call to Follow Jesus COSTS EVERYTHING! - (5:4-6)

From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve. Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.”
